The New Testament.
what does it mean that Jesus died for our sins?
The quick answer is that Jesus died on the cross to provide the way for us to receive forgiveness from our sins. The Bible provides many details regarding this sacrifice of Jesus. As we study the Bible, we understand more and more of salvation and forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
When we say "Jesus died for our sins," we are saying that He died because of our sins. Sin leads to death (Romans 6:23). We were sinners consigned to death, and we had no way to stop sinning. Jesus came into our world and lived a perfect life, so death had no hold on Him. Yet, in His grace, Jesus chose to die on our behalf. He took our punishment for us. As He died "for our sins," as our substitute, He prayed that we would be forgiven. Since our penalty has already been paid, God will forgive all who put their trust in Jesus.
At school I was taught critical logical thinking in all subjects. I was taught to question, to cross reference, to experiment. I was taught how to think not what to think. I naturally applied this to every subject in school and through my working life. I found it completely alien and illogical that when it came to teaching of Religious Education everything told to me was to be taken as a fact without any need for proof or explanation. it was so and is so because the bible say it is so. It was a sin to question the word of god.
In History classes I looked for and asked the teachers about the time of Jesus and was told "that is faith and nothing to do with History" HUH? BUT i exclaimed "you are teaching the class about the Roman empire, how it came to be, evolved and eventually became the cornerstone of Roman Catholicism. But there are no records or writings about Jesus and all these things he did? His disciples? no corroborating evidence from Egypt or the Greeks? ANYWHERE" NO not one the teacher conceded. Not one single mention of this most important religious figure the whole world knows about? Incredible! I thought.
and asked for corroboration of the events of the New testament and found .. NOTHING I find it incredulous that bright intelligent human beings take 1 single book that Throughout the historical record of this planet has no written down by the Greeks Romans and Egyptians
Jesus' death means that we have access to God. In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Sin had separated us from God, but, at the moment of Christ's death, the veil in the temple, separating the priests from the presence of God, was ripped in two (Mark 15:38).
Jesus' death means that the sacrifices of the Old Testament Law are no longer needed. In previous times, various offerings were required by the Law as atonement's for sin. Yet these sacrifices were only temporary. With the sacrifice of Jesus, we were provided a perfect, one-time atonement from sin (Hebrews 10:10).
